The Pimsleur method is supposed to be backed scientifically as one of the quickest ways to learn a language, which explains why it is so popular - and so expensive. Pimsleur is like the cooler, newer Rosetta Stone for this generation. You can download the Drops Multi-Language app with all of the possible languages, but that’s a more recent app that I haven’t personally had time to research. Unlike other language learning apps, Drops has an app for each language course, which means that when you download the Korean Drops app, you will only be learning Korean on that app.
But it is not the only option for language learners! There were two other apps I decided to try out: Drops and Pimsleur.ĭrops (Korean) is the highest rated app for learning Korean across Google Play and the App Store.
The little green Duolingo owl is basically synonymous with language learning in the modern age. There are a couple of big names in language apps, and the biggest is probably Duolingo. When I decided to start trying to learn Korean, I did what anyone with a smartphone would do: I looked up language learning apps. While this has never caused me any serious angst, I have always wanted to learn the language that he and the rest of our family speak.
He immigrated to America long before I was born, and for some reason, he, like many of his generation, decided not to teach Korean to his children. HOWEVER Duolingo is good for if you want to review what you have learned from other lessons.I’m a first-generation Korean-American on my father’s side. I didn't notice it at the time, but now I look back at the website and notice it. As a beginner who didn't know ANYTHING about Korean, the audios all sounded the same to me. It uses phrases that are NOT used in everyday sentences, such as "the bus climbed up the chair" as a way to catch the readers attention but in reality it just holds you back because you don't learn ways to use it in real life. This can affect the way you speak in the future.
This is bad because once the reader actually learns 한글, they still depend too much on the romanization. It relies WAY too much on romanization to teach 한글 (Hangul) from the beginning. I would much rather you learn from Korean Unnie or TTMIK on YouTube. Take it from someone whose been studying for over half a year now that while Duolingo may be great for reviewing it, not as a beginning source.
